BC Wheelchair Basketball Society 2011-12 Annual Report
| Nov 19, 2012 |
From the Office:
First off, I would like to take the time to thank Kathy Newman, who recently retired as Executive Director of BC Wheelchair Sports Association. After over 30 years of service to the wheelchair sport community and support of BCWBS we wish you happy and healthy adventures in the years to come! This past season was as busy as ever as BCWBS moved our office into the Spinal Cord Injury-BC building on SW Marine Drive in Vancouver and BCWBS hosted the 2012 National Championships as part of the 25th anniversary of the Rick Hansen Man in Motion World Tour. Throughout the year BCWBS continued to focus on participation initiatives, high performance programming, regional development and expanded collaborations and partnerships as elaborated on in the report which follows. BCWBS's success is a direct result of our volunteer leaders, coaches, dedicated partners and hard-working staff. I am always proud to be a part of the community which is BC Wheelchair Basketball. Thank-you to the hard working BCWBS staff, Board of Directors, and volunteer regional representatives who make it all happen. AS well, a special thank-you to photographer Gerry Kripps, who many of you have seen court side over the past couple years taking phenomenal photos for BCWBS.
- Carrie Linegar, Managing Director
Athlete Development / Participation Based Programming:
Let’s Play: The Let’s Play program is intended to help kids with mobility limitations to become physically active early in life by helping to establish the fundamental skills, knowledge and abilities needed to confidently participate in play, sport and physical education with their peers. The program is directed at children in British Columbia 8 years of age and under with mobility related disabilities. This past season Marni Abbott-Peter took on the role of Let’s Play Coordinator and has been busy liaising with our community delivery partners, identified children and parents, hosting a Let’s Play Date in Abbotsford and visiting schools as a resource support for teachers. BCWBS also announced the launch of the Let’s Play official website and teacher’s resource. www.letsplaybc.ca is a central hub providing basic tools, services, and information on providing inclusive activity programs for kids with physical disabilities and mobility limitations and their peers. Our thanks to the CPC for supporting the Let’s Play Program through their Recruitment Program.
School and Participation Program: The BCWBS Schools and Community Participation Program is designed to educate students, teachers, and community groups about the sport of wheelchair basketball and about disability awareness.
