EDMONTON INFERNO IS THE TEAM TO BEAT AFTER DAY ONE OF 2018 CWBL WOMEN'S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 

(April 6, 2018 – RICHMOND, B.C.) Edmonton Inferno emerged undefeated in opening day competition at the 2018 Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League (CWBL) Women's National Championship at the Richmond Oval in Richmond, B.C.

The three-day tournament is co-hosted by Wheelchair Basketball Canada and BC Wheelchair Basketball Society (BCWBS) and features the top female club teams in the country. 

“BC Wheelchair Basketball is excited to host the 2018 Women’s National Championship," says Sian Blythe, Executive Director of BCWBS. "Part of the legacy of us hosting events like this is the exposure and inspiration the next generation of players get from being exposed to this top level of competition.”

In an intense first game, Edmonton Inferno defeated Quebec 67-62. Edmonton took an early lead in the first quarter but after a few fast breaks from Quebec, they closed the gap to two points by half time. It was evenly matched in the second half, but in a decisive fourth quarter, Edmonton ultimately took the win. Arinn Young (Edmonton) and Cindy Ouellet (Quebec) both led their teams with 32 points apiece.

In the second game of the day, the Saskatchewan Hot Wheels took on host BC Breakers. Saskatchewan dominated with a 20-6 lead after the first quarter and were able to maintain a solid lead throughout the game, winning with a final score of 64-41. Shelby Harrower (Saskatchewan) put up an impressive 22 points. 

With one win apiece, Edmonton and Saskatchewan battled each other next to claim the top spot of the day. After a 10 point deficit in the first quarter, Edmonton made a come back and took the win over Saskatchewan with a final score of 70-67. Erica Gavel (Saskatchewan) and Arinn Young (Edmonton) were the top point producers with 30 points each.

Quebec claimed their first win of the tournament, outpacing BC 70-33 in the final game of the day. Cindy Ouellet was once again the offensive catalyst for Quebec with 16 points, while Amanda Yan responded with 12 points for BC.

Two more round-robin games take place tomorrow morning. Tomorrow's afternoon semi-final games will determine which two clubs will battle for the gold.

L’EDMONTON INFERNOEST L’ÉQUIPE À BATTRE APRÈS LA PREMIÈRE JOURNÉE DU CHAMPIONNAT NATIONAL FÉMININ 2018 DE LA LCBFR 

(Le 6 avril 2018 – RICHMOND, C.-B.LEdmonton Inferno est ressortie invaincue de la compétition, lors de la journée d’ouverture du Championnat national féminin 2018 de la Ligue canadienne de basketball en fauteuil roulant (LCBFR), à l’Anneau olympique de Richmond, à Richmond, C.-B.

Le tournoi de trois jours, organisé conjointement par Basketball en fauteuil roulant Canada et la BC Wheelchair Basketball Society (BCWBS), regroupe les meilleures équipes féminines de clubs du pays. 

« BC Wheelchair Basketball se réjouit d’accueillir le Championnat national féminin 2018 », a déclaré Sian Blythe, directrice administrative de la BCWBS. « L’organisation d’événements comme celui-ci permet, entre autres, d’inspirer la prochaine génération de joueuses exposées à ce haut niveau de compétition. »

Dans un intense premier match, l’Edmonton Inferno a vaincu le Québec 67-62. Edmonton a tôt fait de prendre l’avance au premier quart, mais après quelques contre‑attaques rapides du Québec, l’équipe a comblé l’écart de deux points à la mi‑temps. Le jeu est demeuré égal dans la seconde mi-temps, mais dans un quatrième quart décisif, Edmonton s’est finalement emparé de la victoire. Arinn Young (Edmonton) et Cindy Ouellet (Qc) ont marqué le plus grand nombre de points de leurs équipes respectives, avec 32 points chacune.

Dans le deuxième match de la journée, les Saskatchewan Hot Wheels ont affronté l’équipe hôte, les BC Breakers. La Saskatchewan a dominé avec une avance de 20-6 après le premier quart et a réussi à bien se maintenir en tête tout au long du match, gagnant finalement par 64-41. Shelby Harrower (Saskatchewan) a enregistré un score impressionnant de 22 points. 

Avec une victoire chacune, les équipes d’Edmonton et de la Saskatchewan se sont affrontées pour réclamer la première place de la journée. Après un déficit de 10 points dans le premier quart, Edmonton s’est repris et a réclamé la victoire contre la Saskatchewan avec un score final de 70-67. Erica Gavel (Saskatchewan) et Arinn Young (Edmonton) ont été les meilleures marqueuses avec 30 points chacune.

Le Québec a obtenu sa première victoire de la journée, en vainquant la C.-B. 70-33 dans le dernier match de la journée. Cindy Ouellet a été à nouveau le catalyseur offensif pour le Québec avec 16 points, tandis qu’Amanda Yan a riposté avec 12 points pour la C.-B.

Deux autres matchs du tournoi à la ronde auront lieu demain matin. Les demi-finales de demain après-midi détermineront les deux clubs qui se disputeront la médaille d’or.
